A wonderful alternative to white synthetic sugar is Raw organic sugar, which is beige in color because it isn't bleached. The bleaching process is the true enemy. There isn't anything wrong with sugar it is what THEY have done to sugar that makes it so potentially harmful! So just switch to Organic Raw Sugar to avoid the possibility of these complications.
