"Our Nation is severly vitamin D deficient" stated my ob/gyn while I was pregnant with Eden. It was one of the few statements I actually agreed with and didn't just smile at and pretend to agree. You know the whole western medicine vs natural health opposition...ANYWAY, She was right. Because of the widely mainstream belief that the sun is bad and we need to lube up with sunscreen to protect ourselves from skin cancer we have now become a vitamin D deficient society. We still get skin cancer except now the problem is way worse because we now lack an extremely important vitamin that protects us from illness. So here is the scoop, When the Sunlight enters through the retina in our eyes it triggers the brain to tell the skin to absorb vitamin D. If you are wearing sunglasses this process will not occur. If you are wearing sunscreen this process will also not occur and infact it blocks the uv and uva rays but allows in uvb which CAUSES internal cancer!
We should be spending 1 to 2 hours in the summer sun a day to get the proper amount needed. That is of course an average and depends on where you live. But most of us do not spend 2 hours a week in the sun and if we are in the sun we are wearing sunscreen. Sunscreen is loaded with toxic chemicals that get absorbed into the skin and go straight to the blood stream and organs causing mutated cells aka cancer. When chemicals are heated they get released even faster and become even more toxic like when the sunscreen is baking in the sun on your skin. There is organic sunscreen and if you have had skin cancer before or feel you really need protection then I highly recommend using organic sunscreen. Ideally when you are in the sun you should limit it to avoid sunburn. For example, spend 15 minutes with your skin exposed then put a hat on and a long sleeve linen or use an umbrella, then 15 minutes later repeat the process. But the truth and point of this post is that we ALL need to be supplementing Vitamin D! Especially during flu season. Vitamin D is crucial for supporting the immune system and fighting colds/flus. Before you run to the herb shop and get your supplements you really should visit a Natural Health Practitioner such as myself to have your PH level tested. If you are too alkaline, vitamin D could make you even more alkalized and could make you extremely sick! For more details on Vitamin D visit Drmercola.com he is a luminary in natural health and should be an inspiration to us all. Enjoy the sunshine.
